A Gentle Knight

tree BY ALAN WALDOCK, FLORIDA
I first met Tony when I attended a summer school run by the British Theatre Association back in 1974, where he both taught and directed me. It would not be an exaggeration to say that that course, and the annual ones that followed it, changed and shaped my life. My wife Michele and I met at the 1975 Cheltenham course; we attended every year until 1981, after which we moved to the US. Unfailingly, the
highlight of each course was Tony's wit, charm, and erudition.

On many of our trips back to the UK we managed to lunch or dine with Tony at least once (save when he was at Tufts); alas, the last time we saw him was in November 2002, when I took this picture. I, both of us, all of us, will miss him enormously. He was a very perfect gentle knight.
